Roy John Martin

Roy John Martin, 68, of Capitol Square Apartments, 379 North St., formerly of Lee, died Wednesday at home.
Born in Pittsfield on Sept. 3, 1938, son of Roy E. and Mary Honiker Martin, he attended Pittsfield High School and later received his General Equivalency Diploma.
A printer, Mr. Martin was employed by Appalachian Press in Lee for 14 years and by Studley Press in Dalton for seven years.
For more than 12 years, he and his late wife, the former Helen Marie Smith, served as foster parents for more than 50 teenage boys through the Department of Youth Services. He later worked for the Key Program as an overnight worker, retiring in 1986 because of physical difficulties.
Mr. Martin used his personal experiences within the correctional system to speak to offenders and was the first inmate to leave the grounds of a Massachusetts correctional facility to speak publicly to offenders as well as to law-enforcement students and professionals. He was an initial participant in the Scared Straight Program from Nebraska and one of the first members of the Berkshire County Volunteers in Probation program.
He was a founding member and first president of the Lee Youth Association.
His wife, whom he married Nov. 30, 1961, died April 12, 1985.
He leaves his life partner, Rosemarie Flynn, with whom he resided; two sons, Michael S. Martin and Mark D. Martin, both of Pittsfield; a daughter, Nancy Lynn Foster of Pittsfield; a brother, Frederick Martin of Darien, Ga.; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- The family of Roy John Martin, who died Wednesday, Nov. 29, 2006, will receive friends today from 4 to 7 in the dining room of Capitol Square Apartments, formerly known as Bradford Arms.
The funeral will be held at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Mr. Martin may be made to HospiceCare in the Berkshires, in care of DERY FUNERAL HOME, 54 Bradford St., Pittsfield, MA 01201.
Mr. Martin also leaves two daughters-in-law, Lisa and Nichole; seven grandchildren, Elyshia, Brooke, Sabrina, Michael, Kaitlyn and Morgan Martin, and Shauna Sayers; and three great-grandchildren, Brenda and Joseph Sayers, and Zachary Mathes.
He was predeceased by two brothers, Lawrence J. and Daniel J. Martin.
