Dorothy Lotto

Dorothy Lotto, 88, of 1 Colt Road, formerly of Mt. Vernon, N.Y., died Monday at home.
Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., July 15, 1918, daughter of Charles and Anna Shapiro Weiss, she spent most of her life in New York City and Mt. Vernon.
After 20 years as a homemaker, Dorothy graduated from Hunter College with a bachelor's degree in philosophy and began a career teaching elementary school in the Bronx.
She subsequently earned a master's degree in education.
After retiring from teaching, she developed a passion for traditional rug hooking and became a certified rug-hooking instructor.
She took great pleasure in teaching this craft to many students over the last 25 years, including a number of Japanese women who have introduced it to others in Japan.
She was married for 61 years to Bernard Lotto, who died on Oct. 26, 2005.
She leaves two sons, David Lotto of Pittsfield and Daniel Lotto of West Caldwell, N.J.; a brother, Joseph Weiss of West Hempstead, N.Y.; five grandchildren; and nine nieces and nephews.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Dorothy Lotto, 88, who died Dec. 11, 2006, will take place at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, Dec. 14, at the Riverside Chapel in Mt. Vernon, N.Y.
Burial will follow at Sharon Gardens, Valhalla, N.Y. The family will receive guests during Shiva at the home of her son David, at 16 Chester St. in Pittsfield on Sunday, Dec. 17, from 2 to 5 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Berkshire Mass-Care, an organization supporting single-payer health care, or Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in care of DEVANNY-CONDRON FUNERAL HOME, 40 Maplewood Ave., Pittsfield, MA 01201.
Dorothy was devoted to the care of her husband, Bernard, in his final years. She also leaves two daughters-in-law, Norah Walsh and Erica Lotto.
