John Funke Jr.

John Funke Jr., 87, of 1110 Marshall Road, Greenwood, S.C., died Thursday at Wesley Commons in Greenwood.

He was the father of Carole Ann Collins of Pittsfield.

Born in Atlanta on March 15, 1919, son of Dr. John Funke and Berta Thomson Funke, he was a 1941 graduate of Emory University and a 1952 graduate of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, where he earned a bachelor of science degree in chemical engineering.

Mr. Funke was plant manager of General Electric Co.'s Gas Turbine Division in Greenville, retiring in 1984 with 43 years of service, 16 of those years in Greenville.

He was a member of John Knox Presbyterian Church in Greenville, Phi Delta Theta Fraternity and the Elfun Society. He was a sportsman.

He and his wife, the former Olive Cox, were married 63 years.

Besides his wife and daughter, he leaves two other daughters, Elizabeth F. Robbie of Norwich, Vt., and Janice F. Bradshaw of Charlotte, N.C.; a son, Dr. John Funke III of Greenwood; a sister, Anne Funke Goldthwaite of Atlanta; 10 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- A memorial service for John Funke Jr., who died Thursday, Dec. 14, 2006, will be conducted Wednesday at 2 from Asbury Hall at Wesley Commons in Greenwood by the Rev. Carol Peppers-Wray. The family is at Apartment 1001, The Tree House at Wesley Commons, and will receive friends at Asbury Hall immediately following the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Wesley Commons, 1110 Marshall Road, Greenwood, SC 29646, or to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 1741, Greenwood, SC 29648. Mr. Funke also leaves three sons-in-law, James Collins, Peter Robbie and Meade Bradshaw; a daughter-in-law, Margaret; and a sister- and brother-in-law, Phyllis Cox Carlson and her husband, Wendell.
