Christine Helen Vanhoenacker

Christine Helen Vanhoenacker, 69, of Melbourne Place, formerly of Dawes Avenue, died Thursday at Berkshire Medical Center.
Born in Shenandoah, Pa., on Dec. 7, 1937, daughter of Andrew and Helen Koslusky Popalis, she graduated from Villa Joseph Marie Academy. She received a bachelor's degree from Emmanuel College in Boston and a master's degree from the University of Vermont in Burlington.
Mrs. Vanhoenacker was a speech pathologist. She was employed by Berkshire County schools for 25 years, retiring from the North Adams Public School System in 2000. She also maintained a private practice.
She was a member of Unitarian-Universalist Church. Before college, she worked and traveled with The Grail, an international lay movement of Catholic women. Later, she pursued her interest in women's spirituality.
Mrs. Vanhoenacker volunteered as a teacher of English to immigrants and was a member of various women's groups and book groups in the Berkshires. She enjoyed music, art and square dancing.
Her former husband, Joseph H. Vanhoenacker, is deceased.
She leaves two sons, Jason Edward Vanhoenacker of Shutesbury and Mark Andrew Vanhoenacker of London; and a brother, Bruce Popalis of Shenandoah.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- A memorial service for Christine Helen Vanhoenacker, who died Thursday, Dec. 14, 2006, will be held in the spring. There will be no calling hours.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory may be made to Unitarian-Universalist Church of Pittsfield or Canoe Meadows and Pleasant Valley Wildlife Sanctuaries, all in care of DERY FUNERAL HOME, 54 Bradford St., Pittsfield, MA 01201.
Mrs. Vanhoenacker also leaves a sister-in-law, Jean, and three nephews, Andrew, Matthew and Bruce, and their families. She treasured her travel experiences throughout her life, particularly a year spent in Paris in the 1960s. Despite her health troubles, she traveled to Europe twice in recent years.
