Robert Charles Nicholas

Robert Charles Nicholas, 83, of Pownal, Vt., formerly of Pittsfield, died Friday at Southwestern Vermont Medical Center in Bennington.

Born in Great Barrington on Aug. 2, 1923, son of Everett A. and Florence Gillett Nicholas, he moved to Pownal in 1973.

An Army veteran of World War II, he served with the 744th Light Tank Battalion from Normandy through the Battle of the Bulge. His battalion also assisted in the Liberation of Buchenwald. He earned the Bronze Star and several other campaign medals.

Mr. Nicholas was the founder and owner of West End Sheet Metal in Richmond. He also founded and ran Richmond Oil Co. and was a co-owner of the former Indian Motorcycle Shop.

He was a deacon at Richmond Congregational Church and a member of the Richmond Consolidated School Committee. He was a founding member of the Richmond Fire Department and founded the Richmond Little League. He was a Cub Scout leader and a member of the Masonic Lodge in Pittsfield, the West Stockbridge American Legion and West Stockbridge Kiwanis.

He was married to the former Deborah Nolan.

Besides his wife, he leaves two sons, Harold Nicholas of Petersburgh, N.Y., and John Nicholas of Stephentown, N.Y.; two daughters, Sharon Jones of West Stockbridge and Nancy McAlear of Austin, Texas; 16 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Robert C. Nicholas, who died Friday, Dec. 15, 2006, was conducted Sunday, Dec. 17, 2006, at 1 p.m. at Pownal Methodist Church by the Rev. Gary Dickson.

Burial with military honors took place Monday, Dec. 18, at 1 p.m. in Green Lawn Cemetery, Great Barrington. HANSON-WALBRIDGE FUNERAL HOME, 213 West Main St., Bennington, Vt., is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Nicholas was predeceased by two brothers, Donald and Francis Nicholas, and a sister, Ann Paris. He was the proud owner of the Southwestern Vermont Medical Center Intensive Care Unit mascot, "Judy," his beloved dog who passed away on Oct. 27, 2006.
