John Joseph Sokolowski Sr.

John Joseph Sokolowski Sr., 74, of 59 Harris St., a former Pittsfield firefighter, died yesterday at Berkshire Medical Center.
Born in Pittsfield on June 22, 1932, son of Nicholas and Mary Sauwick Sokolowski, he was a 1950 graduate of Pittsfield High School and earned an associate degree in fire science from Berkshire Community College.
A Navy veteran of the Korean War, he served aboard the USS Perry from 1952 to 1956.
Mr. Sokolowski was appointed to the Pittsfield Fire Department on Sept. 15, 1957. He served 18 years as a firefighter and another 18 years as a fire inspector. Following his retirement in 1993, he worked as a security guard at the Red Lion Inn.
He was a communicant of St. Mark's Church, where he served as a Eucharistic minister.
He coached the Eagles in the West Little League and volunteered several years with the Winter Special Olympics at Eastover and at the Christian Center.
He and his wife, the former Angelina M. DelSignore, were married Oct. 6, 1956.
Besides his wife, he leaves a son, John J. Sokolowski Jr. of Pittsfield; a daughter, Bobbie S. Sokolowski of Easthampton; four sisters, Anne Moore and Marion Loehr, both of Pittsfield, Madeline Galeucia of Dalton and Patricia Adams of Stuart, Fla.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for John J. Sokolowski Sr., who died Thursday, Dec. 21, 2006, will be conducted Wednesday at 8:45 from DERY FUNERAL HOME, with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 9:30 at St. Mark's Church celebrated by the Rev. John C. Salatino, pastor.
Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery. Calling hours will be Tuesday from 4 to 7 at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Mr. Sokolowski may be made to Winter Special Olympics or to UNICO (Make-a-Wish Foundation), in care of the funeral home, 54 Bradford St., Pittsfield, MA 01247.
Mr. Sokolowski also leaves his loving daughter-in-law, Patricia Sokolowski, and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, Michael Sokolowski, and two sisters, Doris Intellisano and Katherine Hosier.
