Virginia A. Sanborn

Virginia A. Sanborn, 88, of 140 Melbourne Road, Melbourne Place, died yesterday at home.
Born in Sempronius, N.Y., on Nov. 1, 1918, daughter of Herman and Grace Kiltz Crofoot, she was educated in Sempronius and graduated from high school in Cortland, N.Y., in 1937.
She received a bachelor of music degree in 1941 from Houghton (N.Y.) College, a master's degree in music from Ithaca College in 1961. She was a former longtime resident of Lenox and Richmond.
Mrs. Sanborn was employed as a music and kindergarten teacher for 30 years. She was a music teacher for the New Lebanon (N.Y.) School System and taught music education in the Pittsfield Public Schools. She also taught kindergarten for many years in Pittsfield schools, retiring in 1975.
She and her husband, Alvah W. Sanborn, former director of Pleasant Valley Wildlife Sanctuary, were married Aug. 2, 1941. He died June 17, 2005.
She was a member of Richmond Congregational Church, where she sang in the choir and served as a substitute organist.
She also was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma Society and enjoyed gardening, baking, wintering in Sanibel, Fla., and traveling to such places as Central America, Europe, England, Scotland, New Zealand and Alaska.
She leaves a daughter, Gail S. Platz of Belchertown; a son, Warren H. Sanborn of Beltsville, Md.; a sister, Mariam Fordham of Surprise, Ariz.; and two grandsons.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- A memorial service for Virginia A. Sanborn, who died Sunday, Jan. 21, 2007, will be held at a later date. There will be no calling hours. Following cremation, burial will be private. Mrs. Sanborn also leaves two grandsons, Joshua Kerson and Joseph A. Platz.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Sanborn Memorial Education Fund at Pleasant Valley Wildlife Sanctuary or to HospiceCare in the Berkshires, both in care of DERY FUNERAL HOME, 54 Bradford St., Pittsfield, MA 01201, which is in charge of arrangements.
