Albert E. Whiton Jr.

Albert E. Whiton Jr., 87, of 100 East Housatonic St. died Thursday at Berkshire Medical Center following a long illness.
Born in Springfield on Sept. 15, 1919, son of Albert E. and Florence Johnson Whiton, he grew up in Springfield and graduated from Springfield Technical High School in 1937. He later graduated from Worcester Polytechnic Institute in 1942 with a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering.
Mr. Whiton spent World War II in the Pacific, working on combat naval vessels as a field service engineer for General Electric Co. After 15 years of short-term GE field service assignments, he moved to Pittsfield, where he spent the remainder of his career with GE Naval Ordnance. He retired from GE in 1983 with 41 years of service. During his retirement, he drove for Elder Services.
He was a member of South Congregational Church, where he served on the Board of Missions. He enjoyed collecting and repairing antique clocks and telephones and reading Sherlock Homes books.
He was a member of the GE Elfun Society, and joined the Civitan Club in July 1960 and served on the board. He was past president and lieutenant governor of the New England District of Civitan for two terms, was a past board member of the Navy League of Berkshire County, a member of the Stanley Club and a member of the Rip Van Winkle chapter of the National Association of Watch and Clock Collectors, where he served as past president.
He was also a member of the Berkshire Chapter of the NAWCC. Mr. Whiton was a lifetime member of the Massachusetts Chapter of Mayflower Descendants. Other memberships in telephone collectors associations included ATCA and TCL.
Mr. Whiton and his wife, the former Geraldine Paton Hosmer, were married 62 years.
Besides his wife, he leaves two daughters, Carole Beckwith Whiton Speth of Glendale, Ariz., and Nancy Whiton Slonaker of Richwood, Ohio; a son, A. Ernest Whiton III of Middleton; and five grandchildren.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- A memorial service for Albert E. Whiton Jr., who died Thursday, Jan. 18, 2007, will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at South Congregational Church, conducted by the Rev. Joel Huntington, pastor.
In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Mr. Whiton may be made to South Congregational Church or the Civitan Club of Pittsfield, in care of WELLINGTON FUNERAL HOME, 220 East St., Pittsfield, MA 01201.
