Robert R. Carey

Robert R. Carey, 81, of 84 Lillian St., died Monday at Springside of Pittsfield.
Born in Brooklyn, Pa., on Nov. 18, 1925, son of Russell E. and Agnes Birney Carey, he was educated in Pennsylvania schools. He was a 1944 graduate of Harford (Pa.) High School and from the Bliss Electrical School in Washington, D.C. in 1948.
Mr. Carey came to Pittsfield in 1949.
He was an Army veteran of World War II, serving in the Philippines as part of the occupational forces in 1946 and 1947.
Mr. Carey was employed as an electrical engineer technician at General Electric Co. for 37 years, retiring in 1985.
A communicant of Sacred Heart Church, he was an altar server and a member of its Holy Name Society.
He was also a volunteer at the Adoration Chapel at Sacred Heart Church. Mr. Carey was a letter writer and supporter for Amnesty International and enjoyed reading, politics, ballroom and square dancing and ice skating.
He and his wife, the former Rosemary A. Hughes, were married Aug. 23, 1952.
Besides his wife, he leaves a son, David J. Carey of San Diego; an adopted son, the Rev. Nomer Balmaceda of the Philippines; four daughters, Marya Carey Ugelow of Honolulu, Janet M. Carey-Bentz of Frederick, Md., and Ann M. and Kathleen D. Carey, both of Pittsfield; and seven grandchildren.
A son, James Carey, is deceased.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Robert R. Carey, who died Monday, Jan. 22, 2007, will be on Saturday at 8:15 a.m. from DEVANNY-CONDRON FUNERAL HOME, with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 9 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church, celebrated by the Rev. James K. Joyce, pastor.
Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery. Calling hours will be tomorrow from 4 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, if friends desire, memorial donations in his memory may be made to Sacred Heart Church Memorial Fund or HospiceCare in the Berkshires in care of the funeral home.
Mr. Carey is the beloved grandfather of Catherine, Daniel and Micaela Goodrich of Pittsfield, Janak and Shreya Carey of San Diego, and Isaiah and Samuel Bentz of Frederick, Md. He also leaves two sons-in law, Dr. Stephen A. Ugelow and Dale P. Bentz and a daughter-in-law, Lopamudra Carey. He is also predeceased by his twin sister, Ruth A. Carey.
