Gloria Mary Sylvia, 93, a resident of 3 Virginia Ave. since 1962, died Wednesday at Berkshire Medical Center.
Born in Lisbon, Portugal, on Sept. 2, 1913, daughter of Manuel and Amelia Rodrigues Cardozo, she was educated in local schools.
Mrs. Sylvia was employed as a sales clerk at Follwell's Greenhouse when it was located on North Street. For many years, she enjoyed decorating the windows there. She retired in 1986 with 24 years of service. During the 1940s, she was employed by the Glix Brandt pajama factory, and at one time was also employed by Eaton Paper Co.
She was a communicant of St. Joseph's Church.
A member of the former Portuguese-American Club, she also served as past president of the Women's Auxiliary for 12 years. She enjoyed flower gardening, decorating and bowling.
Her husband, Manuel J. Sylvia, whom she married July 4, 1931, in Spencertown, N.Y., died Dec. 16, 1976.
Mrs. Sylvia leaves a son, Manuel T. Sylvia of Pittsfield; two daughters, Clara D. Demastrie of Pittsfield and Victoria M. Sedgwick of Dalton; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Gloria Mary Sylvia, who died Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2007, will be tomorrow at 8:15 a.m., from DERY FUNERAL HOME. A Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9 a.m. at St. Joseph's Church by Msgr. Michael A. Shershanovich, pastor.
Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery. Calling hours will be today from 4 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Mrs. Sylvia may be made to the American Cancer Society in care of the funeral home, 54 Bradford St., Pittsfield, MA 01201. Mrs. Sylvia was predeceased by a sister, Mildred Bernardo.
