February 05, 2007
J. Scott Hurley Jr., 95, of Coburg Village, N.Y., a former resident of Pittsfield, died Monday at Ellis Hospital in Schenectady, N.Y.
Born in Seaford, Del., on June 10, 1911, son of J. Scott Hurley Sr. and Eva Johns Cooke Hurley, he graduated from Drexel Institute (now Drexel University) in Philadelphia with a bachelor's in chemical engineering.
Among the first chemical engineers hired by General Electric Co., Mr. Hurley moved to Pittsfield in the late 1930s to work on temperature-resistant insulating materials.
During World War II, Admiral Hyman Rickover of the electrical section, Bureau of Ships, requisitioned 40 gallons of silicone varnish to be used as shipboard electrical insulation. The top-secret task fell to Mr. Hurley and his associates, who were given carte blanche to obtain the necessary equipment and materials. They produced the first usable quantities of silicone varnish. He later was transferred to the Waterford, N.Y., plant, from which he retired in 1976.
He was a member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers and the American Society for Testing and Materials and received its distinguished service award in October 2000. He was also a member of the GE Elfun Society and the Silicone Retirees' Club.
He and his wife, the former Elsa Johnson, were married July 20, 1940.
Besides his wife, he leaves a son, J. Scott Hurley III of Annandale, Va.; a daughter, Pamela L. Spurling of Thompson, Pa.; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
