Robert Victor Hamilton

Robert Victor Hamilton, 86, a former longtime resident of Adams, died Tuesday at Mount Greylock Extended Care Facility.

Born in Ponca City, Okla., on Nov. 1, 1920, son of Lawrence J. and Mabel Jones Hamilton, he was educated in Texas schools and graduated from high school at the age of 16. He obtained a bachelor's in 1941 and a master's in psychology in 1943.

In 1952, he attained a doctorate in psychology from the University of Nebraska. He completed advanced studies at the Psychoanalytic Institute in New York City in 1975.

Mr. Hamilton was employed by North Adams State College, now Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts, as a professor and as chairman of the psychology department. He also was chief psychologist of the Northern Berkshire Child Guidance Center, maintained a private clinical psychology practice and was a part-time examiner for the Massachusetts Rehabilitation Commission. He retired from NASC in 1987. Before that, he was an associate professor at Wichita (Kan.) State University and at Wesleyan University in Lincoln, Neb., and management development psychologist with Boeing Aircraft Corp. in Wichita. He also worked for Rheem Corp. in Chicago.

In the 1960s, Mr. Hamilton moderated a weekly radio talk show called "Conversation Piece." After his retirement from teaching, he maintained a private practice in Berkshire County and was active in many professional, civic and community organizations. He was a former member of the Adams Town Meeting, a member and chairman of the Adams Council on Aging and former president of the Berkshire County Elder Services Group.

He was an ombudsman for the Massachusetts Long Term Care Division of the Executive Office of Elderly Affairs from 1992 to 1997 and a facilitator for Care Giver Support Group for Elder Services of Berkshire County. He was vice president of the Massachusetts Retirees Association, president of the Adams Senior Citizens Club and a weekly columnist for The Transcript in Northy Adams.

He and his wife, the former Phyllis Velte, were married Dec. 13, 1949. She died in October.

He leaves three sons, Charles Donald Hamilton of Tucson, Ariz., Gerald Max Hamilton of Diamond Point, N.Y., and Lawrence John Hamilton of Boston; two daughters, Phyllis Ann Hamilton of Victoria, Texas, and Kathryn Clare Hamilton of Danbury, Conn.; eight grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- Cremation arrangements for Robert V. Hamilton, who died Tuesday, Feb. 20, 2007, are being handled by MCBRIDE FUNERAL HOME of Adams. At a later date, family and friends will hold a private gathering in celebration of his life. Memorial donations in his name may be made to Adams Council on Aging, 20 East St., Adams, MA 01220, or to a charity of the donor's choice.

Mr. Hamilton also leaves three daughters-in-law, Beverly Ball Hamilton, Michelle Harlow Hamilton and Rachel Wilson; a son-in-law, David Glenn Lemke; eight grandchildren and their spouses, Mark Arthur and Lisa Petre Hamilton of Tucson, Robert Victor and Marnee Kvaall Hamilton II of Brno, Czech Republic, Morgan Harlow and Heather Mose Hamilton of Troy, N.Y., Marcia Ann Pessolano of Hartford, Conn., Mason Velte Hamilton of Diamond Point; Lawrence Gerald Pessolano of Danbury, Conn.; Anthony and Jennifer Hamilton Petri of Fort Edward, N.Y., and Keith and Meredith Hamilton Sonley of Warrensburg, N.Y.; eight great-grandchildren, Zachary, Nicolas and Ashley Hamilton of Tucson, Karlee, Koree and Kaisee Hamilton of Brno, and Lonna and Keith Sonley of Warrensburg.
