Roger William Gavin Sr.

Roger William Gavin Sr., 81, of Wahconah Heights, died yesterday at Berkshire Medical Center.
Born in Hinsdale on March 20, 1925, son of Patrick H. and Lila Bishop Gavin, he attended the former St. Charles School and was a 1944 graduate of St. Joseph Central High School.
Mr. Gavin was employed by Berkshire Contractors, an affiliate of Berkshire Gas, for 10 years, retiring in 1980. Before that, he was employed by Pittsfield Cemetery from 1959 to 1970 and also worked for the former Wyandott Mills for 15 years.
He was a communicant of St. Joseph's Church and enjoyed fishing.
He was a Red Sox fan and enjoyed watching boxing and horse racing.
Mr. Gavin and his wife, the former Joan S. Morin, were married Nov. 6, 1958.
Besides his wife, he leaves a son, Roger W. Gavin Jr. of Pittsfield; a daughter, Joan E. Chapman of North Adams; a brother, Robert E. "Skip" Bristol of Pittsfield; three sisters, Eleanor Gavin, Dorothy Bristol and Caroline Casey, all of Pittsfield; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- A memorial service for Roger W. Gavin Sr., who died Wednesday, Feb. 28, 2007, will be tomorrow at 2 p.m. at DERY FUNERAL HOME, conducted by the Rev. William D. Furey, pastor of Berkshire Union Chapel.
Burial will be at the convenience of the family. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Mr. Gavin may be made to Berkshire Humane Society in care of the funeral home, 54 Bradford St., Pittsfield.
Mr. Gavin also leaves a son-in-law, David W. Chapman; a daughter-in-law, Julie A. Gavin; seven grandchildren, Melissa A. Bombard, Renee J., and Jacalyn J. Gavin, Roger W. Gavin III and Tammy M., David J. and Mark A. Chapman; as well as six great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by four brothers.
