Leslie T. Sutherland Jr.

Leslie T. Sutherland Jr., 78, of 100 Anita Drive, died Friday at his home.

Born in Yonkers, N.Y., on March 20, 1928, son of Leslie T. and Viola Knapp Sutherland, he was a 1945 graduate of Charles Gorton High School in Yonkers and attended Cornell University.

Mr. Sutherland began his lifelong career in the lumber industry at Marcellus Lumber Co. in Oneida, N.Y., where he worked in the accounting department. In l959, he went to work for Dettinger Lumber in Pittsfield. In 1969 he became a part owner, and eventually purchased the business. In 1991, he sold the business to two of his children. He continued to work part time until the time of his death.

Mr. Sutherland was a communicant of St. Teresa Church, where he was eucharistic minister and a member of the Men's Group.

He had served as president of the Northeast Retail Lumber Association and president of the Massachusetts Retail Lumber Association, and was chairman of ENAP Inc., a cooperative buying group. He was also president of the Kiwanis and Jaycees clubs, and St. Joseph's High School's Booster Club. He was also a member of the Awenke Yacht Club in New Baltimore, N.Y., where he kept his boat, the Pipe Dream.

Mr. Sutherland and his wife, the former Charlotte Jeanne Eberwein, were married July 2, 1960.

Besides his wife, Mr. Sutherland leaves a son, David C. Sutherland of Pittsfield; three daughters, Nancy J. Lotz of Sugarloaf, Pa., Ellen S. Morris of North Adams and Joanne Sutherland Spence of Pittsfield; two half-sisters, Doris Van DeKoppel of Salem, Ore., and Suzi Sutherland-Martin of Clackamas, Ore.; and 10 grandchildren.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- A Liturgy of Christian Burial for Leslie Thompson Sutherland Jr., who died Friday, March 2, 2007, will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at St. Teresa Church, celebrated by the Rev. Mark Mengel SSC, Pastor. Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery.

Calling hours will be tomorrow from 3 to 7 p.m. at DERY FUNERAL HOME. In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Mr. Sutherland may be made to St. Teresa Church or the Berkshire Visiting Nurse Association, both in care of the funeral home, 54 Bradford St., Pittsfield.

Mr. Sutherland also leaves his sons-in-law, Jeffrey Lotz and Eric Spence; his daughter-in-law, Anne Sutherland; and his 10 grandchildren, Charlotte and Jeffrey Lotz, Alex, Christian and Jonathan Sutherland, Tonia, David and Jared Nicholas and Max and Charlie Spence. He will always be remembered by his family, many loyal customers and business and civic associates as a gentle man with a quiet voice and a big heart.
