The Rev. Joseph P. Massaro CSS

The Rev. Joseph P. Massaro CSS, 84, a member of the Stigmatine Fathers and Brothers, died Sunday at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield after suffering a massive brain hemorrhage.
He is the brother of Ralph Massaro of Pittsfield, and, at one time, was pastor of Mount Carmel Church.
Born in Newton on March 28, 1922, son of Nunzio and Helena Marello Massaro, he entered the Stigmatine Seminary in Waltham on Sept. 7, 1936. He professed his first vows on Sept. 9, 1940, and his final profession was on Sept. 9, 1943, in Waltham.
He was ordained to the Holy Priesthood on June 12, 1948, at St. Paul Church in Wellesley by John Cardinal Wright. The Rev. Massaro served the church and the Stigmatine community in many ministries, including Wellesley, West Springfield, White Plains, N.Y., East Longmeadow, Waltham, Hinsdale, Ludlow, Lynn and Agawam.
He was the founder and general chairman of the Charter 99 Scholarship Committee, which was instrumental in assisting many men on their journey to the priesthood.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- The wake and funeral for the Rev. Massaro, who died Sunday, March 18, 2007, will both be held at Mount Carmel Church, 359 Fenn St., Pittsfield. The wake will be tomorrow at the church from 3 to 7 p.m. Viewing will conclude with a solemn vigil at 7 p.m. The funeral Mass will be celebrated on Thursday at 11 a.m.
Burial will take place at Sacred Heart of Jesus Cemetery in Milford on Thursday at 3:45 p.m. Father Massaro's passing was very sudden. He will be deeply missed by his Stigmatine Confreres and his own family as well as so many relatives and friends and parishioners. Father Massaro served the church and the Stigmatine community very generously. May God now grant Father the reward of Blessed Eternity in Heaven. May he rest in peace.

A memorial Mass will be held at St. Ann Mission Church, 576 Memorial Ave., West Springfield today at 7 p.m. FLYNN & DAGNOLI-BENCIVENGA FUNERAL HOME, 5 Elm St. Pittsfield, is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Massaro also leaves a sister-in-law, Eleanor Massaro and a brother-in-law, Wallace Burton, both of Pittsfield, and many loving nieces and nephews. Two sisters, Christine Blaine and Elizabeth Burton, are deceased.
