John Henry Wehry

John Henry Wehry, 78, of Berkshire Town Apartments, died Tuesday at Curtis Manor Retirement Home, where he had resided since March 2006.

Born in Pittsfield on June 14, 1928, son of Joseph J. Wehry Sr. and Alice B. Hunt, he attended Dalton schools and was a 1945 graduate of the former Berkshire Business College.

He also graduated from Alexian Brothers Hospital School of Nursing in Chicago in 1957 and in 1964 graduated with a bachelor's degree from DePaul University in Chicago.

A Korean War veteran, he was a sergeant in the Army and served in Germany.

From 1947 to 1954, Mr. Wehry was employed by General Electric Co. and the Sheraton Hotel in Pittsfield in clerical positions. From 1957 to 1967, he was a registered nurse for Alexian Brothers Hospital in Chicago. He returned to the Berkshires in 1967, where he did private duty nursing. In 1976 he went to work as a staff nurse with Austen Riggs Center in Stockbridge, where he remained until retiring in January 1987. Following retirement, he was employed part time for several years by Elder Services of Berkshire County and for the Molar Agency.

Mr. Wehry was a communicant of St. Joseph's Church.

He was a member of the Alexian Brothers Hospital School of Nursing Alumni Association and a member of AARP. He volunteered at bingo at Mount Carmel Church and enjoyed theater and the arts.

Mr. Wehry leaves two brothers, Joseph J. Wehry Jr., of Concord, N.H., and Francis W. Wehry of Pittsfield.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for John Henry Wehry, who died Tuesday, March 20, 2007, will be held tomorrow at 8:15 a.m. from DERY FUNERAL HOME with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 9 a.m. at St. Joseph Church, celebrated by Monsignor Michael A. Shershanovich, pastor. Burial will be at a later date in Fairview Cemetery. Calling hours will be today from 3 to 6 p.m. at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Mr. Wehry may be made to HospiceCare in the Berkshires or to Curtis Manor Activity Fund in care of the funeral home, 54 Bradford St., Pittsfield. Mr. Wehry was predeceased by his brothers, Henry, who died in 2000, and Robert and Joseph J. III, both of whom died in infancy. He also leaves 13 nieces and nephews.
