Bernard Herbert Starr, 90, of 51 Sampson Parkway, died Wednesday at North Broward Medical Center in Pompano Beach, Fla.
Born in Chelsea on March 13, 1917, son of Samuel and Bessie Ginsberg Starr, he was a graduate of Chelsea High School and a 1940 graduate of Suffolk University Law School.
A World War II veteran, he served with the Army Corps of Engineers in Europe in Gen. George Patton's Third Army. He later served in Tokyo with the War Crimes Division until 1946.
A lawyer, Mr. Starr established his law practice in Pittsfield in 1946, maintaining it until his retirement in 2005. He also taught business law in the evening division at Berkshire Community College for many years.
He was a member of Knesset Israel Synagogue and president of the Jewish Community Center for three years. He was chairman of the Social Service Index and served on the executive board of the Berkshire Bar Association and on the board of the Pittsfield Kiwanis. He also served as Lanesborough town counsel for many years.
He was master in Superior and Probate courts, and a member of the Jewish War Veterans, the Charles Persip Post 68 American Legion and the Pittsfield Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was chosen Man of the Year by the Jewish Community Center in the mid-1970s. He enjoyed traveling.
His wife, the former Shirley Siegel, whom he married March 28, 1948, died April 6, 1998.
He leaves a son, Steven Starr of Waltham; two daughters, Jacalyn Starr of Bedford and Lauren Starr of Worcester; and two grandsons.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Bernard Herbert Starr, who died Wednesday, March 21, 2007, will be Sunday, March 25, at noon at Sinai Academy, 199 South St., Pittsfield. Burial will follow in Knesset Israel Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Shirley and Bernard Starr Endowment Fund, c/o Knesset Israel Synagogue, or to the Make-a-Wish Foundation. Memorial week will be observed at his residence, 51 Sampson Parkway, until 5 p.m. on Tuesday March 27. FLYNN & DAGNOLI-BENCIVENGA FUNERAL HOME, 5 Elm St., Pittsfield, MA 01201, is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Starr also leaves a daughter-in-law, Jeanne Starr; two grandsons, Robert Starr and Timothy Starr, both of Waltham; his beloved dog, "Tootsie"; and many wonderful friends. One brother and two sisters are deceased.
