John E. Hall

John E. Hall, 81, of 30 Warwick St., and 1324 Perico Point Circle, Bradenton, Fla., died Friday at Blake Hospital in Bradenton following a short illness.
He had spent winters in Florida for the past 15 years while continuing to spend summers in the Berkshires.
Born in Pittsfield on Dec. 31, 1925, son of Christopher and Ida Schnopp Hall, he was a former longtime Dalton resident who came to Pittsfield in 1976. He was educated in Dalton schools and was a 1943 graduate of the former Dalton High School, where he was the class valedictorian.
He went on to the University of Massachusetts at Amherst where he graduated summa cum laude in 1950 with a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering. While at UMass, he was a member of Phi Kappa Phi, a honorary engineering fraternity.
He was a Navy veteran of World War II, entering the V5 Program, where he took part in flight training in bases situated across the United States. He was eventually assigned to a tour of duty aboard the Escort USS Point Cruz as an ensign-aviation boatswain's mate, 3rd class, following the surrender of German forces and before the conclusion of the Japanese conflict in the Pacific region.
An electrical engineer, Mr. Hall was employed at General Electric Co. in the power transformer division for 33 years, serving in a variety of management-level positions. He retired in 1986.
He was a communicant of St. Teresa's Church.
While at GE, he was a member of IEEE and the Elfin Society. He remained active in community service while residing in Pittsfield and Florida, with involvement in RSVP, the Visitor's Center on Park Square and Habitat for Humanity in Florida. He enjoyed woodworking, reading, gardening, music and big band jazz.
He and his wife, the former Rosemary Daniels, were married Oct. 18, 1952, at St. Mark's Church.
Besides his wife, he leaves two sons, Christopher J. Hall of Bradenton, Fla., and James D. Hall of Pittsfield; three daughters, Judyth A. Coughlin of Glastonbury, Conn., Marilee E. Piper of Pittsfield and Suzanne Siebert of Bennington, Vt.; a sister, Barbara Powers of Lee; and seven grandchildren.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for John E. Hall, who died Friday, March 23, 2007, will be held Saturday, with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. at St. Teresa's Church in Pittsfield, celebrated by the Rev. Mark Mengel, pastor.
Burial will take place at a later date in St. Joseph's Cemetery. There are no calling hours. Mr. Hall was predeceased by a brother, Bernard Hall, of Naperville, Ill. A memorial service and luncheon will also take place on April 18, 2007, at 11 a.m. at the Palma Sola Botanical Garden, 9800 17th Ave. N. W. Bradenton, Fla.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the charity of the donor's choice in care of the DERY FUNERAL HOME, 54 Bradford St., Pittsfield, MA 01201 which is in charge of arrangements.
