Jack L. Bennett

Jack L. Bennett, 92, formerly of Tor Court, died on Friday at Merrimack Valley Hospital following a brief illness.

He had been living in West Newbury for the past three years.

Born in Pittsfield on July 29, 1914, son of Thomas and Eva Wormleighton Bennett, he was a 1932 graduate of Pittsfield High School and received a bachelor's degree with honors in engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1936.

Mr. Bennett served in the Army Air Corps during World War II, when he earned the rank of major and had tours in Europe and the Pacific.

He had a distinguished career for 46 years with General Electric's transformer department in Pittsfield and was honored with an award for the "The Engineer's Engineer."

He served as chairman of the Pittsfield Sewer Commission and was a consultant with the Power Technology Group. He was a 50-year member of the Mystic Lodge of Masons A.F. & A.M. in Pittsfield and was an active member of the Berkshire Hills Country Club for many years. Mr. Bennett enjoyed his weekly round of golf and remained physically active until his death.

He is predeceased by his wife, the former Gertude Michel, whom he married on April 19, 1953. She died in February 2004.

Mr. Bennet leaves a son, Thomas Bennett of Bow, N.H.; a daughter, Patricia Mayo of West Newbury; and four grandchildren.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- Private graveside services for Jack L. Bennett, who died Friday, March 23, 2007, will be held in Pittsfield Cemetery. There will be no calling hours. Donations may be made to the American Heart Association, in care of WELLINGTON FUNERAL HOME, 220 East St., Pittsfield, MA 01201, which is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Bennett also leaves a daughter-in-law, Barbara Bennett; and a son-in-law, Duane Mayo. He was most proud of his grandchildren, Gerald Bennett, Christopher Mayo, Paige Roberts and Tyler Simms.
