Sybil Mary Griffin

Sybil Mary Griffin, 89, of 150 Pineview Road, Tequesta, Fla., a former longtime resident of Colonial Gardens, Pittsfield, died Saturday at Palm Beach Gardens in Palm Beach, Fla.

She moved to Florida five years ago.

Born in New Haven, Conn., on May 25, 1917, daughter of Alexander D. and Hazel Gauthier Fish, she was a 1935 graduate of Pittsfield High School and a 1938 graduate of the former Bishop Memorial School of Nursing.

A registered nurse, Mrs. Griffin was employed by the former House of Mercy and its successor, the former Pittsfield General Hospital, for 26 years, retiring in 1964. She also worked as a private-duty nurse.

While in Pittsfield, she was a communicant of Sacred Heart Church. She was a member of the Alumnae Association of the Bishop Memorial School of Nursing.

She enjoyed reading, playing cards and going to the beach.

Her husband, Henry A. Griffin, whom she married June 19, 1943, in Pittsfield, died Dec. 9, 1982.

She leaves two daughters, Mary A. Vieira of Waterbury, Conn., and Patricia M. Levy of Jupiter, Fla.; five grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Sybil Mary Griffin, who died Saturday, March 31, 2007, will be Tuesday, April 10, at 11:15 a.m. from DERY FUNERAL HOME, with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at noon at Sacred Heart Church celebrated by the Rev. James K. Joyce, pastor.

Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery. Calling hours will be Monday from 4 to 6 p.m. at Dery Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Jay Robert Lauer Hospice and Palliative Care Unit, in care of Dery Funeral Home, 54 Bradford St., Pittsfield.

Mrs. Griffin was a devout Catholic and devoted to the church. She enjoyed being with her grandchildren She also is survived by her sister-in-law, Monica Delorey of Dalton, and several nieces and nephews.
