Edmund J. Prehoden Sr.

Edmund J. Prehoden Sr., 81, of 73 Tanner St., died of congestive heart failure Tuesday at the home of his daughter, Mary E. Prehoden, 1553 Guy St., San Diego.

Born in Pittsfield on Oct. 30, 1925, son of Jan and Sofia Filipkowski Przychodzien, he was a lifelong resident of Pittsfield and a 1943 graduate of Pittsfield High School.

He also took courses in criminal justice at Berkshire Community College.

He was a Marine veteran of World War II, serving with the 4th and 10th Defense Brigade attached to the 1st Marine Division of the 3rd Amphibious Core in the South Pacific. He fought in Guadalcanal and Peleliu and was discharged in 1945.

Mr. Prehoden was employed by the Berkshire County House of Corrections beginning in 1953. He retired as a major in the Berkshire Country Sheriffs Department, where he was director of personnel and purchasing, in 1984.

He was a communicant of St. Mary's Church, a member of American Legion Post 68 and was a youth counselor with the Pittsfield Boys' and Girls' Club.

He enjoyed traveling and vacationing with his family in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and San Diego.

He and his wife, the former Mary L. Ferris, were married Aug. 12, 1950.

Besides his wife and daughter, he leaves a son, Edmund J. Prehoden Jr. of San Diego, and three grandsons.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- Mr. Edmund J. Prehoden Sr., longtime House of Corrections employee, died Tuesday, April 24, 2007. He was the loving grandfather of Brett, Tanner and Dustin Prehoden and the father-in-law of Carrie, and friend of Norma Hopper. He was a man of honor, integrity and faith. His handshake was relied on. His good nature and humor was a lovable trait. He was love and will be missed by many.

He was predeceased by a brother, Theodore, and a sister, Alfreda Nykorchuck. The funeral will be Wednesday at 10 a.m. from the DWYER FUNERAL HOME with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. in St. Mary Church, celebrated by the Rev. Peter A. Gregory, pastor of St. Charles Church. Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery.

Calling hours will be at the funeral home tomorrow from 4 to 7. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to San Diego Hospice Foundation, 4311 Third Ave., San Diego, CA 92103. They were exemplary in assisting Ed for the past two months.
