Sylvia Mary Kaufmann, 88, of 15 Weston St., died yesterday at Providence Care Center in Lenox, where she had resided for a short time.
Born in Bromley, England, on Aug. 29, 1918, daughter of Daniel and Marion Hammersley Godden, she was a graduate of Bromley High School
During World War II, she worked at Bletchley Park, transcribing decoded messages. After the war, she worked for the British and American allied forces in Vienna, Austria, where she met her husband, Gerhard Kaufmann. They were married Dec. 23, 1954, and moved to Pittsfield in 1957.
Mrs. Kaufmann was employed by the former England's department store in the lingerie department for 17 years until its closing. Previously, she worked for the Times Book Club in London.
She enjoyed reading, traveling and gardening.
Besides her husband, she leaves a daughter, Linda Kaufmann of Pittsfield, and two sisters Daphne Slayter of Swanage, England, and Dawn Hipwell of Oxford, England.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- Sylvia M. Kaufmann died Monday, May 7, 2007. Per her wishes, there will be no funeral.
She enjoyed her cats. Donations may be made to the Berkshire Humane Society, in care of WELLINGTON FUNERAL HOME, 220 East St., Pittsfield, MA 01201.
