Alan Lipton

Alan Lipton, 69, of 169 Valentine Road, died Saturday at Berkshire Medical Center.

Born in Pittsfield on May 16, 1938, son of Esther Bashevkin Lipton and the late William Lipton, he attended Pittsfield schools and graduated from Stockbridge School in 1956.

He graduated from Purdue University with a bachelor's degree in 1960.

He served in the Army and the Army reserves, attaining the rank of captain in the ordinance corps.

Mr. Lipton was owner of Mass Machinery Inc., located on South Street, for 12 years. Before that, he was president of Lipton Steel and Metal Products, and was employed by Lipton Industries. He worked in the machinery business for more than 40 years.

He was a member of Knesset Israel Synagogue and a former member of Ahavath Sholem Synagogue.

He was former president of the Jewish Federation of the Berkshires, former vice president of the Jewish Community Council, Chairman of the Israel Bonds in Berkshire County, an associate of Hadassah (of which his wife was national president), board member of Pittsfield Community Hebrew School and a member of the Jewish War Veterans of Pittsfield. He was also Berkshire County chairman of the United Jewish Appeal campaign and was active in the United Way. He was also former president of Machinery Dealers Information Systems, was a corporator of the former Lenox Savings Bank and was an Eagle Scout.

Mr. Lipton and his wife, the former Bonita "Bonnie" Hiller, were married June 7, 1960.

Besides his mother, of Pittsfield, and his wife, he leaves two daughters, Andrea Becker of Northbrook, Ill., and Susan Lipton of Pittsfield; a brother, Mark Lipton of Middlefield; a sister, Claire Zimmers of Boca Raton, Fla.; and six grandchildren.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Alan Lipton, who died Saturday, May 26, 2007, will be conducted tomorrow at 1:30 p.m. at Knesset Israel Synagogue by Rabbi David Greenspoon, spiritual leader. Burial will follow in Knesset Israel Cemetery.

Mr. Lipton also leaves six grandchildren, Eden and Abra Lipton, Mia Gelpi and Adam, Zachary and Abigail Becker; a son-in-law, Larry Becker. He was in a skiing accident at Jiminy Peak on Jan. 19, 1998. Memorial donations may be made to Berkshire Hills Chapter Hadassah, 16 Colt Road, Pittsfield, MA 01201.
