Mary Agnes Bonneville

Mary Agnes Bonneville, 75, of 350 Ponce Place, Boulder, Colo., died Monday at home.

Born in Pittsfield on May 30, 1931, daughter of Eugene and Mary Anna Bonneville, she graduated from Smith College in 1953 and received a master's degree from Amherst College in 1955. In 1961, she was awarded a doctorate from Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research, now The Rockefeller University.

Ms. Bonneville was professor emerita of the department of molecular, cellular and developmental biology at the University of Colorado at Boulder, where, from 1970 to 1996, she taught cell biology, microscopic anatomy, physiology, human reproduction and techniques of electron microscopy.

From 1964 to 1966, she was a member of the faculty of Brown University, and from 1966 to 1970, of Harvard University.

She was co-author of "Fine Structure of Cells and Tissues," a comprehensive atlas of cell and tissue structure revealed by electron microscopy.

She was a member of the American Society for Cell Biology, the Electron Microscopy Society of America and the American Association of Anatomists. She was on the evaluation committees for the National Academy of Sciences and for the National Institutes of Health.

Ms. Bonneville was a trustee and founder of the Keith Porter Endowment, which supports research and education in cell biology. She contributed substantially to the early oral history of the field by conducting videotaped interviews with leading cell biologists. She was active in the United Nations Association of Boulder County and the university's Retired Faculty Association, where she served as president from 2001 to 2002. She also was a member of the League of Women Voters.

She was a philanthropist and enjoyed classical music, traveling, classic movies and gardening. She also had a strong interest in American Indian arts.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Mary Agnes Bonneville, who died Monday, May 21, 2007, will be held Tuesday, May 29, at 10 a.m. at St. Stanislaus' Church in South Deerfield, followed by a reception at the church.

She leaves an aunt, Agnes Chapman of Washington, D.C., and an aunt and uncle, June and Leo Racine of Millbrook, N.Y. Local arrangements are under the direction of WRISLEY FUNERAL HOME, South Deerfield. Leading the way for women in science, Ms. Bonneville was the only woman in the first class of 10 students admitted to the then newly formed student program at The Rockefeller University, formerly the Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research.

In Boulder, she participated in several committees in defense of women's rights and in eliminating sexual discrimination on the university campus.
