Nicholas D. Placido

Nicholas D. Placido, 79, of 43 Atwood Ave., died Saturday at home.

Born in Pittsfield on April 25, 1928, son of Antonio F. and Mary Marini Scipione Placido, he attended Pittsfield schools.

He was a Navy veteran of World War II.

A construction worker, Mr. Placido was employed by various companies for 35 years through Local 473. He retired in 1988.

He was a communicant of Mount Carmel Church and a member of the Italian-American Club of Pittsfield.

He was a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 448 and a founding member of the former Onota scuba diving club in Pittsfield. He enjoyed gardening, fishing and playing billiards.

He and his wife, the former Irene G. Molchanoff, were married Aug. 20, 1955.

Besides his wife, he leaves a son, Mark A. Placido of Pittsfield; a daughter, Tina M. Giroux of Adams; a brother, Peter A. Placido of Pittsfield; four sisters, Concetta McCarthy of Lee, Domenica "Skip" Baxley of Redwood City, Calif., Lucy Lee of Pittsfield and Christine V. Scipione of Miami Springs, Fla.; and two grandchildren.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Nicholas D. Placido, who died Saturday, May 26, 2007, will take place Thursday, May 31, at 9 a.m. with full military honors from FLYNN & DAGNOLI-BENCIVENGA FUNERAL HOME, 5 Elm St., Pittsfield. A Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. at Mount Carmel Church by the Rev. Geoffrey J. Deeker, CSS, pastor.

Entombment will take place at St. Michael the Archangel Chapel Mausoleum on the grounds of St. Joseph's Cemetery. Calling hours at the funeral home will be tomorrow from 4 to 7 p.m. He was the loving grandfather of Matthew and Jonathan Placido.

Other survivors include a daughter-in-law, Cynthia A. Placido, and a son-in-law, David A. Giroux. He was predeceased by a brother, Samuel A. Scipione, and a sister, Ann Lombardi. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to HospiceCare in the Berkshires in care of the funeral home.
