Zilpha "Sis" Thompson

Zilpha "Sis" Thompson, 91, formerly of 261 Narragansett Ave., died Saturday at Berkshire Medical Center.

She had resided at Sugar Hill in Dalton for the past three years.

Born in Pittsfield on Nov. 18, 1915, daughter of Rudson and Sarah Barnes Bellinger, she was educated in Dalton schools and was a 1933 graduate of the former Dalton High School. She also graduated from Green Mountain College in 1935 and from the University of Michigan in 1937 with a degree in sociology and psychology.

Mrs. Thompson was employed by the Welfare Department as a social worker for 19 years, working in Pittsfield, Dalton and Lanesborough. She was also a police matron for five years.

She was a member of First United Methodist Church of Dalton, where she taught Sunday school and sang in the choir, and was active with the Camp Fire Girls in Dalton for many years and a councilor at its summer camp. She was also a Red Sox fan.

Mrs. Thompson was renowned for her hatpin collection and lectured frequently on the subject. She was skilled at needlepoint, and her Berkshire Heritage work was exhibited at the Berkshire Museum.

Her husband, Orlo L. Thompson, whom she married Nov. 18, 1939, died Oct. 1, 1983.

She leaves two sons, Orlo S. Thompson of Groton and Jeffrey B. Thompson of Pittsfield; a daughter, Zilpha L. Murray of Springfield; eight grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- A memorial service for Zilpha M. Thompson, who died Saturday, June 9, 2007, will be conducted Saturday, June 23, at 11 a.m. at First United Methodist Church of Dalton by the Rev. Robert Jackson.

There will be no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to First United Methodist Church of Dalton, Roof Restoration Fund, in care of BARTLETT-WELLINGTON FUNERAL HOME, 525 Main St.,, Dalton, MA 01226, which is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Thompson was a lover of Pontoosuc Lake, where she spent countless hours year-round. She was a worldwide traveler, visiting every state and going abroad with her traveling partner, Leonard Swift. She described herself as the "happy camper."

She was predeceased by her brothers, Norman, Richard and Rudson Bellinger, and Michael Ringanese. She also leaves eight grandchildren, Michael, Ross and Robert Murray, Debi and Stephen Thompson, Stephanie Seeley, Shauna Roberts and Laurie Keatts. "Sis" was very grateful and appreciative of her friends at Sugar Hill.
