Nathaniel Brown Sr.

Nathaniel Brown Sr., 63, of 192 California Ave. died Friday at home.

Born in Savannah, Ga., on May 26, 1944, son of Benjamin and Sarah Whaley Brown, he was educated in schools there and attended Berkshire Community College.

Mr. Brown was employed by the state Department of Mental Retardation as a caregiver for eight years, retiring three years ago because of illness. Before that, he was employed by General Electric Co. for 25 years, where, among other positions, he worked as a fireman for two years. He also worked for Meridian Associates, for Berkshire County Arc and at the Lee Academy.

He was a member of Price Memorial AME Zion Church.

He enjoyed fishing and was a Yankees fan.

He and his wife, the former Brenda J. Porter, were married Sept. 25, 2004, at Price Memorial AME Zion Church.

Besides his wife, he leaves two sons, Nathaniel Brown Jr. of Stafford, Va., and Nathaniel Johnson of Savannah; a stepson, Dana Hubbard of Pittsfield; five daughters, Altomese Brown of Salford,England,Rochelle Brown of New York City, Nathaline Sappington of Elkridge, Md., and April Wright and Pamela Johnson, both of Savannah; a stepdaughter, Victoria Austin of Pittsfield; a brother, Benjamin Brown of Bronx, N.Y.; four sisters, Thelma Brown of Los Angeles, Betty Howe of Radcliff, Ky., Ernestine Macintyre of Columbus, Ga., and Mary Moody of Pittsfield; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Another son, Timothy Johnson, is deceased.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Nathaniel Brown Sr., who died Friday, June 15, 2007, will be conducted Tuesday at 1 p.m. at Price Memorial AME Zion Church by the Rev. Willard Durant. Burial will follow in Pittsfield Cemetery.

A calling hour will be held from noon to 1 p.m. at the church. In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Mr. Brown may be made to HospiceCare in the Berkshires, in care of the funeral home, 54 Bradford St., Pittsfield, MA 01201.

Mr. Brown also was predeceased by a brother, Henry Brown, and by three sisters, Edith Roberts, Doris Brown and Gertrude Jivens. He also leaves a host of nieces and nephews. He enjoyed spending time with his family and grandchildren.
