Elsie M. Bertolino

Elsie M. Bertolino, 97, of 148 Broadview Terrace, died Wednesday at Providence Care Center of Lenox, where she had resided for three weeks.

Born in Acushnet on Dec. 12, 1909, daughter of Antonio and Orsola Fontana Papa, she was brought up in New Bedford, where she was a Girl Scout and attended New Bedford High School.

She moved to Pittsfield in 1927.

Mrs. Bertolino was employed by General Electric Co. in the porcelain plant for nine years.

She was a communicant of Mount Carmel Church and was a member and past president of its Ladies' Guild.

She was also a member of the church choir, a member of its bocce league, and a worker at the church bingo since its beginning more than 33 years ago. She worked at all the church bazaars, lawn parties and parish activities.

She was also a member of the Bocce League at the Italian-American Club, a member of the ITAM Lodge 564 of Pittsfield and the Senior Bowling League at Candlepin Lanes.

In 1986, she was selected as one of Pittsfield's 100 Splendid Citizens. She enjoyed knitting, playing the violin, baking and cooking Italian food. She was a Boston Red Sox fan.

She was the widow of Remo S. Bertolino, who died Aug. 27, 1971. They were married April 14, 1934.

Mrs. Bertolino leaves two daughters, Shirley Hedman of Schenectady, N.Y., and Elaine LaPierre of Pittsfield, with whom she resided; a son, Raymond Bertolino of Pittsfield; 10 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Elsie M. Bertolino, who died Wednesday, June 27, 2007, will be conducted Monday at 9 a.m. from the FLYNN & DAGNOLI-BENCIVENGA FUNERAL HOME, 5 Elm St., Pittsfield. A Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. at Mount Carmel Church by the Rev. Geoffrey J. Deeker, CSS, pastor. Burial will follow in the family plot in St. Joseph's Cemetery. Calling hours at the funeral home will be tomorrow from 4 to 7 p.m. The Ladies Guild of Mount Carmel Church will meet at 5:30 p.m. for a vigil service.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Mount Carmel Church or HospiceCare in the Berkshires, care of the funeral home. She was a participant in Citizens Against Child Abuse Doowah Gang from 1987 into the late 1990s and part of the Oldies But Goodies group through 2004. "These Boots Were Made for Walking" and "Devil with the Blue Dress On" were two of the numbers that endeared her to her audiences. She had been featured in The Pittsfield Gazette, The Catholic Observer, The Berkshire Eagle and Real to Real. She enjoyed knitting and made Christmas stockings for hundreds of children in Pittsfield and beyond. She loved baking chocolate chip cookies and making Italian specialties such as ravioli and gnocchi.

She was a fervent fan of the Boston Red Sox and enjoyed two championships in her lifetime, one in 1918 and one in 2004. For many years, she took part in the Martinelli Bocce Classic Tournament in Dalton and Eastham. Elsie was first and foremost in her life a mother, grandmother and great-grandmother and none of us will ever forget the love that touched us through her. She leaves 10 grandchildren, Ann Marie Carpenter (and her husband Michael), Michael LaPierre (and his wife Barbara), Paul LaPierre (and his wife Sheila), Lisa St. John (and her husband Mark), Suzanne LaPierre, Eric Hedman (and his wife Judy), Karen Hedman (and her husband Darius), Chris Hedman (and his wife Karen), Robert Bertolino (and his wife Amber), and Pattey Bertolino. She also leaves 11 great-grandchildren, Michael and Mitchell St. John, Sienna Carpenter, Nichole and Ryan LaPierre, Aleda and Miskas Kirstein, Monika and Jason Hedman, Matthew and Elizabeth Bertolino; a number of nephews and nieces; and her sister-in-law, Flora Bertolino.

She also leaves two sons-in-law, Dale Hedman and Walter LaPierre; and a daughter-in-law, Rita Bertolino. She was predeceased by a granddaughter, Diana Lee Bertolino; three sisters, Victoria Meunier, Wilma LeBlanc and Doris Sacchetti; and a brother, Leonard Papa. Elsie was loved, celebrated and revered in life and will be remembered with thankfulness forever.
