Nora Mary Aherne, 84, of 379 East St. died Thursday at Berkshire Medical Center after a brief illness.
Born in Youghal, County Cork, Ireland, on May 20, 1923, daughter of Arthur and Bridget Nolan Nolan, she attended schools there.
She emigrated to the United States in 1957 and was instrumental in sponsoring numerous Irish women coming to America.
Mrs. Aherne was a homemaker.
She enjoyed knitting and reading.
Her husband, Edward J. Aherne, whom she married April 12, 1946, is deceased.
She leaves three daughters, Linda Benham and Bridget Sultaire, both of Pittsfield, and Nora Hamilton of Dalton; two sons, V. Patrick Aherne of Pittsfield and Edward Aherne of Lanesborough; 14 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- A Liturgy of Christian Burial for Nora M. Aherne will be celebrated Tuesday, July 24, at 10 a.m. at St. Agnes' Church in Dalton by the Rev. Christopher Malatesta, pastor. Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery. Calling hours will be Monday from 5 to 7 p.m. at BARTLETT-WELLINGTON FUNERAL HOME in Dalton.
Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, care of the funeral home, 525 Main St., Dalton, MA 01226. She also leaves 14 grandchildren, with whom she enjoyed spending time, Kelly Wilk, Cara Aherne, Amy Puntin, Brian, Kevin and Christine Aherne, Sean Sultaire, Jessica Rock, Courtney, Jeffrey and Ashley Benham, and Meghan, Kathryn and Sara Hamilton; and 12 great-grandchildren, with whom she also enjoyed spending time, Sydney, Cameryn, Emma, Sophia, Alexis, Kailey, Connor, Austin, Audra, Michaela, Caitlin and Jacob.
She also leaves two daughers-in-law, Kathy and Bella Aherne, and three sons-in-law, Henry Sultaire, Michael Benham and Dan Hamilton. She was predeceased by seven brothers and sisters.
