Robert Irving Johnson

Robert Irving Johnson, 70, of 279 North St., died Sunday at his home after a short illness.

Born in Pittsfield on Aug. 8, 1937, son of Robert and Clara Therriault Johnson, he attended schools in Pittsfield.

He was an Army veteran of the Korean War.

Mr. Johnson was last employed as an independent contractor, delivering The Berkshire Eagle in West Stockbridge, Alford and Richmond for 21 years, retiring in 1998 due to ill health. Previously, he was employed as an assistant director of engineering at the former Hillcrest Hospital and also had been an over-the-road construction truck driver.

He was a member of Morningside Baptist Church.

He was a former member of the Morningside Crime Watch. He was also a coin and model plane collector and enjoyed needlepoint canvassing.

His first wife, the former Lois Ann Gaffney, died Feb. 2, 1990.

On Jan. 6, 2005, he married the former Janet L. Pixley.

Besides his wife, he leaves five sons, Robert L. Johnson of Becket, Kenneth F. Johnson of Windsor, and Thomas E.,Dewey M. and Burton G. Johnson, all of Pittsfield; two daughters, Cynthia Portman of Lovelock, Nev., and Shirley Rodgers of Windsor; a brother, Lawrence Johnson of New Milford, Conn.; three sisters, Betty Palmer of Pittsfield, Beverly Benjamin of New Milford and Geraldine Hebert of Estill Springs, Tenn.; 16 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He also leaves two former wives, Theresa Hover Johnson of Pittsfield and Louise M. Waters Johnson of Lovelock, Nev.

Two sons are deceased: Michael Johnson, who died at birth, and Richard Johnson, who died in 1988.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- Services for Robert I. Johnson, who died Sunday, Aug. 12, 2007, will be conducted Friday at 10 a.m. at Morningside Baptist Church by the Rev. Suzanne Brunnquell, pastor. Burial will follow in the family plot at North Becket Cemetery.

There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorials be made to Morningside Baptist Church in care of DERY FUNERAL HOME, 54 Bradford St., Pittsfield, which is handling arrangements. Mr. Johnson also leaves his mother-in-law, Rose Pixley of Lee.

His longtime companion, Barbara A. Schlesinger, died in 2004.
