Mildred J. McElwain

Mildred J. McElwain, 85, formerly of 118 Lincoln St., died Monday at Hillcrest Commons in Pittsfield, where she had resided since 2001.
Born in Alcove, N.Y., on July 25, 1922, daughter of Dorie and Amelia Austin Shook, she attended schools in Dormansville, N.Y., and Greenville, N.Y, graduating from Greenville (N.Y.) Central High School in 1940.
She later graduated from Charles H. McCann Technical High School's nursing program in North Adams, becoming a licensed practical nurse in 1973.
Mrs. McElwain worked at Berkshire Meadows in Housatonic for 10 years, and spent many years working at other area nursing homes. Prior to her nursing career, she had been a waitress at the Red Lion Inn, Ida & John's Restaurant, the Coach Light Restaurant and the Morgan House.
She enjoyed embroidering, crocheting, tag sales, antiques and was a New York Yankees fan.
She and her husband, Harry E. McElwain, were married in 1942.
Besides her husband, she leaves two daughters, Michele McElwain of Pittsfield and Cheryl Fitzgibbon of Ventura, Calif.; two sons, Harry E. McElwain II of Pittsfield and Craig W. McElwain of Festus, Mo.; and five grandchildren.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- A graveside service for Mildren J. McElwain, who died Aug. 13, 2007, will be held Friday at 2 p.m at Indian Field Cemetery in Alcove, N.Y. Calling hours will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at DERY FUNERAL HOME, 54 Bradford St., Pittsfield.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the charity of the donor's choice in care of the funeral home. Mildred leaves five loving grandchildren, Jason Stewart, William Castagna, Jacob and Lelah McElwain, and Caryn Fitzgibbon; a son-in-law, Paul Fitzgibbon; and two daughters-in-law, Cordel McElwainand Sheila Jerome.
She was predeceased by two brothers, Theodore and Edwin Shook, and by two sisters, Doreen Shook and Margaret Gridley.
