Ruth M. Tooley

Ruth M. Tooley, 91, formerly of 279 East New Lenox Road, died Thursday at Rosewood Homestyle Assisted living, where she had resided for four years.

Born in Plano, Ill., on Sept. 9, 1915, daughter of Alfred T. and Edith Harmon Olsen, she was a 1933 graduate of Big Rock (Ill.) High School and a 1936 graduate of Copley Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in Aurora, Ill.

An Army Nurse Corps veteran of World War II, she served from 1942 to 1944, attaining the rank of lieutenant.

Mrs. Tooley was a homemaker for 21 years. At age 50, she returned to general -duty nursing at the former Pittsfield General Hospital, retiring after 16 years from its successor, Berkshire Medical Center.

She was an active member of First United Methodist Church and of its Women's Group, of which she was a former president.

She also was a member of the American Legion, the Massachusetts Audubon Society, the East New Lenox Road Garden Club, Copley Memorial Hospital Nurses Alumni, the Ladies' Reserve Officers Association and the Historic Preservation organization.

Her husband, Harry C. Tooley, whom she married May 19, 1944, died in April 1987. He was a former Pittsfield milk inspector.

She leaves a son, James E. Tooley of Pittsfield; five grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter.

She was predeceased by two sons, William Tooley and Brian Tooley.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Ruth M. Tooley, who died Thursday, Aug. 23, 2007, will be held at a time and place to be announced, with burial to follow. Calling hours will be Monday from 4 to 7 p.m. at WELLINGTON FUNERAL HOME. She also leaves her grandchildren, Shaun, Brittney, Jeffrey, Philip and Jillian Tooley, and great-granddaughter, Briana Tooley.

In her memory, donations are suggested to the First United Methodist Church Organ and Flower Fund or HospiceCare in the Berkshires, care of the funeral home, 220 East St., Pittsfield, MA 01201. She was predeceased by a brother, Kenneth M. Olsen, and by a sister, Mildred A. McCormick.
