Helen F. Archibald, 91, formerly of Lenox, died Sunday at Hillcrest Commons, where she had been a resident since moving from Melbourne Place in November 2002.
Born in Pittsfield on Sept. 6, 1915, daughter of William F. and Julia Volin Mandell, she was a 1933 graduate of Pittsfield High School and a 1936 graduate of St. Luke's Hospital School of Nursing. She also trained at the Massachusetts Eye, Ear, Nose and Throat Infirmary and the Massachusetts General Hospital of Anesthesia.
She was employed as a nurse anesthetist by the former St. Luke's Hospital in Pittsfield, retiring in 1975. Before that, she worked at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, Strong Memorial Medical Center in Rochester, N.Y., and Brooklyn Jewish Hospital in New York City.
She was a member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church and the St. Luke's Alumni Association and a past member of the American Nurses Association and the American Nurse Anesthetist Association.
Her husband, Dr. Frank W. Archibald, whom she married May 30, 1942, in Medford, died Dec. 3, 2001.
She leaves two sons, Bruce W. Archibald of Lenox and David N. Archibald of Muskogee, Okla.; a sister, Rosemary Wright of South Bethlehem, N.Y.; and two grandchildren.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- Graveside services for Helen F. Archibald, who died Sunday, Sept. 2, 2007, will be conducted Thursday at 11 a.m. in the Mountain View Cemetery in Lenox by the Rev. Hannah Anderson, pastor of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church.
Friends and family should meet at 10:45 a.m. at the cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to HospiceCare in the Berkshires in care of the WELLINGTON FUNERAL HOME, 220 East St., Pittsfield, MA 01201.
Mrs. Archibald was predeceased by a brother, William A. Mandell, and a sister, Ruth Hayes.
