Leona Deuring

Leona Deuring, 90, formerly of Berkshire Place, died Friday at Berkshire Medical Center after a brief illness.

Born in Somerset, Ohio, on May 10, 1917, daughter of Edward E. and Edna Weaver Naragon, she was a graduate of Heidelberg College in Tiffin, Ohio.

During World War II, she was a member of the USO.

Mrs. Deuring was employed as a librarian in the music and local history departments of the Berkshire Athenaeum, retiring in the early 1980s. Before that, she taught English at Lake Erie College in Painesville, Ohio, and English as a second language at Milwaukee School of Engineering.

She was a member of South Congregational Church and of its choir, and a longtime member of the PEO Society.

She enjoyed classical music, literature and the arts, supporting the church's concert series and providing volunteer usher services for many summers at Tanglewood.

Her husband, William G. Deuring Jr., whom she married July 30, 1949, died Dec. 29, 1999.

She leaves a son, William Naragon Deuring of Bethesda, Md.; a daughter, Lisa Deuring Hampton of Sunnyvale, Calif.; two brothers, Elwood Naragon and Lloyd Naragon, both of Medina, Ohio; and four grandchildren.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- The memorial service for Leona "Lee" Deuring, who died Friday, Sept. 14, 2007, will be conducted Thursday at 11 a.m. at South Congregational Church by the Rev. Joel Huntington. A reception will follow in the church parlor.

Burial will be at a later date in Medina, Ohio, where she will be interred with her beloved husband, Bill, to whom she devoted many years of care during his long battle with Parkinson's disease. Lee was a lifelong educator who instilled her artistic passions in her family.

She leaves four grandchildren, Jamie and Bradley Deuring, Aaron Schwartz and Allison Hampton, and many nieces and nephews. Memorial donations may be made to the South Congregational Church Flower or Music Fund, in care of WELLINGTON FUNERAL HOME, 220 East St., Pittsfield, MA 01201.
