Roger Garcia Jr., 77, of 50 Shetland Drive died Saturday at Mount Greylock Extended Care Facility after a long battle with cancer.
Born in Jersey City, N.J., on Jan. 11, 1930, son of Roger and Ramona Costales Garcia, he moved to Jackson Heights, N.Y., at an early age and graduated from Newtown High School in Elmhurst, N.Y., and from City College of New York, where he earned a bachelor's degree in civil engineering in 1951.
A Marine veteran of the Korean War, he designed defense systems in Quantico, Va.
Mr. Garcia moved to Pittsfield in 1955 to take a job in the ordnance department of General Electric Co. He was employed by GE for 38 years, retiring in 1992 as manager of the engineering department. Before that, he worked as a bridge designer for D.B. Steinman in New York City.
He was a member of First United Methodist Church and former chairman of its board of trustees, and a member of the GE Quarter Century and Pensioners' clubs and the Elfun Society.
He enjoyed skiing, playing golf and tennis, gardening, reading and do-it-yourself projects. He was involved with Reading for the Blind and Habitat for Humanity, and volunteered at the High School Academic Decathlons.
He and his wife, the former Grace Marian Claesson, celebrated their 53rd anniversary Sept. 18.
Besides his wife, he leaves his three daughters, Susan Wallingford of Pittsfield, Laura Deacon of Badby, England, and Jeanne Prins of Frederick, Md.; a sister, Norma Martell, of Glen Cove, N.Y.; and five grandchildren.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Roger Garcia Jr., who died Saturday, Sept. 22, 2007, will be conducted Tuesday at 11 a.m. at First United Methodist Church on Fenn Street in Pittsfield by the Rev. Luis E. Benavides. A reception celebrating the life of Roger Garcia will follow at the home of Roger and Grace Garcia.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to First United Methodist Church or HospiceCare in the Berkshires, both in care of WELLINGTON FUNERAL HOME, 220 East St., Pittsfield, MA 01201.
Roger also leaves three sons-in-law, Randy Wallingford, Andrew Deacon and Jonathan Prins; five grandchildren, Christen Clark of Pittsfield, Lauren and Scott Clark, both of Boston, and Lucas and Ian Prins, both of Frederick, Md.; and three nephews, William, Roger and David Boccio, all of Long Island, N.Y.
