John A. Prendergast

John A. Prendergast, 85, formerly of 116 Pine Grove Drive, died Tuesday at Craneville Place in Dalton.

Born in Pittsfield on Dec. 28, 1921, son of John A. and Margaret Dougherty Prendergast, he was a 1942 graduate of St. Joseph's High School.

An Army veteran of World War II, he served 3 1/2 years, 30 months of that time in the Pacific theater. He was discharged with the rank of staff sergeant.

Mr. Prendergast was employed by General Electric Co. in the power transformer division for 40 years. He also worked part time at Viale Florist.

He worked at the Pittsfield Boys' Club, now the Pittsfield Boys' and Girls' Club, for many years, including as membership director, and was involved in woodworking, refereeing, concession sales and Friday night movies. He also was a football referee at both the college and prep level, and a soccer timekeeper.

He was a communicant of Sacred Heart Church, where he was head usher, and a 59-year member of its annual Catholic Appeals Committee, serving as chairman for 25 years.

Mr. Prendergast was a member and former commander of VFW Post 448, a former chairman of the March of Dimes and a 25-year member of the Fourth of July Parade Committee. He was also a member of the Pittsfield Irish Sister City Committee, the Irish-American Club of Berkshire County and the Knights of Columbus.

He was active in the United Way and volunteered for the Red Cross, Berkshire Community Action Council, United Cerebral Palsy and at Albany Veterans' Hospital. He worked with Junior Achievement and was a former treasurer of Pittsfield Community Television, where he also helped in the production of many shows.

His wife, the former Constance Larivee, whom he married June 11, 1949, at St. Charles' Church, died July 15, 1998.

He leaves three sons, Kevin E. Prendergast of Lawrenceville, Ga., David J. Prendergast of Buford, Ga., and Shaun A. Prendergast of Pittsfield; four daughters, Linda Wilkinson of White River Junction, Vt., Carrol A. White of Buford, Sheila L. Rock of Pittsfield and Maureen Jakacky of Dalton; 17 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for John A. Prendergast, who died Tuesday, Sept. 25, 2007, will be Saturday at 8 a.m. at DWYER FUNERAL HOME, 776 North St., Pittsfield. A Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church by the Rev. James K. Joyce, pastor.

Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery. Calling hours will be today from 4 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home. If friends desire, memorial donations may be made to the Pittsfield Boys' and Girls' Club in care of the funeral home. Mr. Prendergast was predeceased by a granddaughter, Wendy Bilia, on Sept. 12, 2003, and by a sister, Mary Wildman.
