Mary Elizabeth Betit

Mary Elizabeth Betit, 84, of 492 Crane Ave. and 549 Essex Road, Daytona Beach, Fla., died Sunday at her home in Florida.

Born in Great Barrington on Nov. 22, 1922, daughter of James F. and Anna Mathis Topping, she was a 1940 graduate of Pittsfield High School.

Primarily a homemaker, Mrs. Betit assisted her husband in the family business, T&M Trucking and Repair, for 15 years.

She was a member of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church and, in Daytona Beach, of the Christian Society at Indigo Lakes.

She enjoyed cooking, baking, sewing, gardening and playing bingo.

She and her husband, Thomas E. Betit, would have celebrated their 59th wedding anniversary Oct.16. They were married at St. Mark's Church.

Besides her husband, she leaves two sons, Gerald T. Betit of Memphis, Tenn., and James Betit of Pittsfield; a daughter, Deborah M. Laureyns of Daytona Beach; a sister, Joan T. Garivaltis of Pittsfield; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- A Requiem Eucharist for Mary Elizabeth Betit, who died Sunday, Sept. 30, 2007, will be celebrated Friday, Oct. 5, at 11 a.m. at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, 67 East St., Pittsfield, by the Rev. John Betit, rector of St. John's Episcopal Church in Sutton, Mass., a cousin of the family.

Burial will follow in Pittsfield Cemetery. Calling hours will be Thursday from 4 to 7 p.m. at DERY FUNERAL HOME. In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Mrs. Betit may be made to the Alzheimer's Association or to St. Stephen's Table, both in care of the funeral home, 54 Bradford St., Pittsfield, MA 01201. Mrs. Betit also leaves four grandchildren, Jaime Traversa, Jacqueline Betit, and Ryan and Kaci Laureyns; two great-grandchildren, Vanessa and Logan Traversa; and her beloved pet, George.

She was predeceased by three brothers, Reginald, George and Harold Topping.
