John E. McLaughlin

John E. McLaughlin, 77, formerly of Doreen Street, died Tuesday at Providence Care Center of Lenox, where he had resided since December 2006.

Born in Pittsfield on Feb. 15, 1930, son of Edward W. and Yvonne Hebert McLaughlin, he was a 1947 graduate of Pittsfield High School and a 1951 graduate of the University of Massachusetts Amherst, where he earned a bachelor's degree in chemistry.

An Air Force veteran of the Korean War, he studied Mandarin Chinese at Yale Institute for Eastern Languages and deciphered radio transmissions during the war between the Communist Chinese and North Korea.

A chemist, Mr. McLaughlin was employed by the former Sprague Electric Co. in North Adams from 1963 to 1968 and by General Electric Co. until his retirement in 1991.

He was a member of the GE Quarter Century and Pensioners' clubs and of the Massachusetts Citizens for Life. He enjoyed gardening, bowling, cross country skiing and making family videos.

He leaves two sons, Christopher J. McLaughlin of Pittsfield and Mark E. McLaughlin of North Collins, N.Y., and seven grandchildren.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- A Liturgy of Christian Burial for John E. McLaughlin, who died Tuesday, Dec. 25, 2007, will be celebrated tomorrow at 10 a.m. at St. Charles' Church by the Rev. Peter A. Gregory, pastor. Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery.

Calling hours will be today from 4 to 6 p.m. at Dery Funeral Home, 54 Bradford St., Pittsfield. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Boys Town in care of the funeral home. He was predeceased by a sister, Jane McMahon, and by a grandson, Matthew J. McLaughlin.
