Pittsfield - Angela Cancilla, 97, formerly of Providence Court, 379 East St., died yesterday at Mount Greylock Extended Care Facility, where she had resided since August 2006.
Born in Isnello, Sicily, Italy, on Dec. 23, 1910, daughter of Mariano and Angela Mazola Cancilla, she emigrated to Boston at the age of 3 and moved to Pittsfield at age 10.
She was educated in local schools.
Miss Cancilla was the cook and housekeeper at Mount Carmel Rectory for 24 years, retiring in 1984. Before that, she was employed by the former Pittsfield Novelty Co. for 24 years.
She was a communicant of Mount Carmel Church and a member of its Ladies' Guild and senior choir. She was active in church affairs and made baptismal robes for the babies of the church. She enjoyed knitting and Italian cooking.
She leaves two brothers, Ernest A. Cancilla of Lancaster, S.C., and Dr. Michael L. Cancilla of Pittsfield; and a sister, Domenica "Mayme" Carchedi of Pittsfield.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Angela Cancilla, who died Monday, Dec. 31, 2007, will be Thursday at 9:15 a.m. from DERY FUNERAL HOME, with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church celebrated by the Rev. Geoffrey J. Deeker, CSS, pastor.
Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery. Calling hours will be tomorrow from 4 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home. The Mount Carmel Ladies' Guild will hold its prayer service tomorrow at 5:30 p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Miss Cancilla may be made to Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, in care of the funeral home, 54 Bradford St., Pittsfield, MA 01201.
Miss Cancilla is lovingly survived by many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by six brothers, Gioacchino, Salvatore, Anthony, Natale, Joseph and Vincent.
