Laburn Austin

Pittsfield - Laburn Austin, 93, formerly of BerkshireTown Apartments, died Wednesday at Springside of Pittsfield, where he had resided since 2003.

Mr. Austin came to Pittsfield in the 1950s, later moving to Springfield for 20 years, then returning to Pittsfield to make his home.

Born in Shaw, Miss., on Aug. 24, 1914, son of Captin and Emma Lefteridge Austin, he was a graduate of Mississippi and North Carolina schools.

A World War II veteran, he served in the Army as a private, first class from Jan. 13, 1944, to Dec. 13, 1946, serving a tour of duty in Normandy and southern France. Among other medals, he was awarded two bronze service stars.

Following his military career, Mr. Austin was employed by the V.A. hospital in Chapel Hill, N.C., where he worked in maintenance and the kitchen. He was later employed by the V.A. hospital in Leeds, where he worked in the kitchen. He was the proprietor of Austin's Barber Shop in Pittsfield for several years. He later was employed as a laborer for the General Electric Co. in Pittsfield for 10 years, retiring Feb. 1, 1977.

He was a member of the Macedonia Baptist Church in Great Barrington.

While in Springfield, he was a foster grandparent at the Urban League. He enjoyed fishing and hunting.

Mr. Austin leaves a daughter, Alice Egerton of Durham, N.C.; a brother, Willie Austin of Pittsboro, N.C.; a sister, Rosie Lee Tuck of Pittsfield; and three grandchildren.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- Services for Laburn Austin, who died Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2008, will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at Macedonia Baptist Church in Great Barrington with the Rev. Joseph Forte, pastor, officiating. Calling hours will precede the service from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. A graveside service will be held Monday at 2:30 p.m. at Pittsfield Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Mr. Austin may be made to the Macedonia Baptist Church in care of DERY FUNERAL HOME, 54 Bradford St., Pittsfield. Mr. Austin also leaves his son-in-law, Cornelius Egerton; his three grandchildren, Carlos, Antwaine, and Alexis Crawford; and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a brother, Edker Austin.
