Francis Michael Cahill Sr.

Pittsfield - Francis Michael Cahill Sr., 91, of 3 Hopewell Drive died Friday at Berkshire Medical Center.

Born in Pittsfield on Sept. 14, 1916, son of Michael H. and Catherine Casey Cahill, he was a 1934 graduate of St. Joseph's High School.

An Army veteran of World War II, he joined the service June 14, 1943, and served with Company F, 318th Infantry Regiment until Jan. 3, 1946. he attained the rank of private, first class, and received several campaign medals.

Mr. Cahill was employed by General Electric Co. for 43 years, retiring from the transformer department in 1981 as a foreman and testman.

He was a communicant of St. Francis' Church and a member of the GE Quarter Century and Pensioners' clubs.

He was also a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 448 and enjoyed reading, war history and walking.

His wife, the former Mary A. Kozack, whom he married Nov. 20, 1941, at St. John the Baptist Ukrainian Catholic Church, died Jan. 5, 2001.

He leaves a son, Francis M. Cahill Jr. of Hardwick; three daughters, Maureen A. Angelini of Pelham, Ala., Catherine D. Goyette of Coral Springs, Fla., and Mary Pat Knepper of Lanesborough; a brother, William Cahill of Lanesborough; nine grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Francis M. Cahill Sr., who died Friday, Jan. 11, 2008, will be conducted today at 9:15 a.m. at DERY FUNERAL HOME, 54 Bradford St., Pittsfield, with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at St. Charles' Church celebrated by the Rev. Peter A. Gregory, pastor.

Burial will be at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial donations be made to the Central Florida World War II Museum or to the Braille and Talking Book Library, both in care of the funeral home.

Mr. Cahill is lovingly survived by a daughter-in-law, Patricia Cahill; three sons-in-law, Edward Angelini, Philip Goyette and Kenneth Knepper; and two sisters-in-law, Virginia Boivin and Helen Kozack.

He was predeceased by two brothers, John and Philip Cahill, and by two sisters, Catherine Cahill and Mary Eleanor McErlain.
