Donald MacDonald III

Pittsfield - Donald MacDonald III, 75, of 25 Taylor St. died Saturday at Berkshire Medical Center.
He was a former Pittsfield deputy fire chief.
Born in Pittsfield on Dec. 13, 1932, son of Donald MacDonald Jr. and Dorothy Aspinall MacDonald, he was a 1950 graduate of Pittsfield High School and received an associate degree in fire science from Berkshire Community College.
A Navy veteran of the Korean War, he served as a radio operator aboard the USS Bonhomme Richard and Valley Forge ships. He received several campaign medals, including the Korean Service Medal with three engagement stars.
Mr. MacDonald was a Pittsfield firefighter from 1965 to 1991, retiring as deputy chief, and a Pittsfield Police officer from 1956 to 1963.
He was a member of the Pittsfield Lodge of Masons, American Legion Post 68 and the Pittsfield Permanent Firemen's Association.
He and his wife, the former Dorothy Belmore, celebrated their 52nd wedding anniversary Dec. 20. They were married in New Hampshire.
Besides his wife, he leaves a son, Scott MacDonald of Pittsfield; two daughters, Lynn Collins and Cindy Viani, both of Pittsfield; seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- Donald MacDonald III passed away peacefully on Saturday, Jan. 12, 2008. A private funeral will be conducted at DEVANNY-CONDRON FUNERAL HOME by the Rev. Hannah Anderson, pastor of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church.
Burial will follow in Pittsfield Cemetery. Per Don's request, there will be no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, if friends desire, donations in his memory may be made to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, in care of the funeral home, 40 Maplewood Ave., Pittsfield, MA 01201.
