Raymond Milton Cooper

Pittsfield - Raymond Milton Cooper, 85, of 255 Lebanon Ave. died Saturday at Springside Long Term Care Facility of Pittsfield after a 50-year battle with multiple sclerosis.

Born in Stockbridge on Nov. 19, 1922, son of Herbert M. and Laura Davis Cooper, he graduated from the former Williams High School there in 1941 and enrolled in the apprentice program at the former May Engineering Co.

An Army veteran of World War II, he served with the Military Police in the European theater.

Mr. Cooper was employed as a machinist at the former Clark-Aiken Co. in Lee for 40 years, retiring in 1987.

He enjoyed gardening, providing fresh vegetables for his table and flowers for his home. He also played the organ, sharing his interest at gatherings at the former Sammy Vincent's Music Store on North Street.

He married the former Joan Smith on Oct. 6, 1956, in Westerly, R.I.

Besides Mrs. Cooper, of Pittsfield, he leaves two sisters, Grace Johnson of Lenox and Mary Kendall of New London, Conn.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- A committal service for Raymond Milton Cooper, who died Jan. 12, 2008, will be held at Stockbridge Cemetery at the convenience of the family. There will be no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Shriners' Children's Hospital, in care of ROCHE FUNERAL HOME, 120 Main St., Lenox, MA 01240.

He also leaves two nieces, Susan Purser Coakley and her husband, Alan, and Nancy Lopez and her husband, Charles, all of Mississippi; two nephews, James Purser of Mississippi and Richard A. Johnson and his wife, Deborah Branscomb, of Maryland; and seven grandnieces and -nephews.

He was predeceased by a sister, Alice Cooper Purser, and by three brothers-in-law, George Kendall, Hubert K. Purser and C. Victor Johnson. Mr. Cooper possessed a dry wit and a keen sense of humor. A devoted son, he visited his parents regularly during their nursing home stay.
