Richard Stockwell

Richard D. Stockwell, 81, of 149 Mendon St., Upton, died yesterday at home. He was the father of Richard S. Stockwell of Pittsfield.

Born on April 30, 1920, he was raised in Upton by Jennette and Windsor Brooks, and graduated from Upton High School. He also graduated from the Stockbridge Agricultural School at the University of Massachusetts.

Mr. Stockwell managed Brooks Farm Dairy in Upton until 1959 when he became employed by the former Draper Corp. in Hopedale as assistant personnel manager and manager of health and safety. He retired in 1979.

He served the town of Upton as a special police officer and a firefighter, and was a member of the Board of Registrars of Voters, the Industrial Development Board, the Upton School Committee, the Mendon-Upton Regional School Committee and the Nipmuc Regional School Building Committee.

Mr. Stockwell was a member and past local president of Kiwanis Club International, the Upton 250th Anniversary Committee, and the American Red Cross Council, and was a Boy Scout merit-badge counselor. He also was a member of the National Management Association, the National Safety Council and the American Society of Safety Engineers. He received the Upton Heritage Hall of Honor Outstanding Living Citizen Award for the year 2000.

His wife, the former Janet "Jennie" Summers, died in 1974.

Besides his son, he leaves another son, Police Chief Thomas B. Stockwell of Upton; two daughters, Maryellen Diana of Easton, Conn., and Kathleen Sullivan of Upton; five grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be Saturday at 11 at WILLIAMS-PEDERSEN FUNERAL HOME, 45 Main St., Upton. Burial will follow in Lakeview Cemetery. Calling hours at the funeral home will be Friday from 4 to 8. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Upton Ambulance Fund, Box 29, Upton, MA 01568, or to VNA Care Hospice Inc., 120 Thomas St., Worcester, MA 01608-1280.
