Karen Gebauer, 59, of 1450 North St. died of cancer yesterday morning at Laurel Lake Center for Health and Rehabilitation, where she had resided for two months.
Born in Bremervorde, Germany, on June 24, 1942, daughter of Berend and Margareta Stueve Maack, she was educated in schools there and emigrated to the United States in 1961. She had resided in Lenox for 17 years and in Pittsfield for a year.
In her early years, she was employed as a governess in Westchester County, N.Y., and also worked at Barkley's Bank in New York. She worked for Haystack Ski Area in Wilmington, Vt., and as a teachers' aide in the Shelburne (Vt.) School System. She was employed by Stevenson & Co. insurance company as a customer service representative in the commercial lines department. Most recently, she worked at Guido's Fresh Marketplace.
She was a former member of the German-American Club of Lenox and the Pittsfield Kiwanis Club.
She leaves a son, Michael P. Gebauer of Boston; a daughter, Kirsten Hoffstedt of Lanesboro; three sisters, Christa Meyer, Monika Willen and Anke Kock, all of Germany, and two grandchildren.
Calling hours will be tomorrow, Sept. 5, from 4 to 7 at DWYER FUNERAL HOME. Burial and funeral will be in Bremervorde, Germany, at a later date. If friends desire, memorial donations may be made to the Berkshire County division of the American Cancer Society in care of the funeral home, 776 North St., Pittsfield, 01201.
