James P. Rowley, 85

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — James Patrick Rowley, 85, of 40 Paula Ave. died Friday, Sept. 9, 2011, at his home.

Born in North Adams on Jan. 8, 1926, son of James L. and Mary McDonnell Rowley, he was a graduate of the former St. Joseph's High School there and attended St. Michael's College in Vermont.

Mr. Rowley was first employed as an accountant at Rowley Auto Sales, then as a salesman for Metropolitan Life Insurance for many years until his retirement. He was also the owner and operator of R&R Tax Service.

He was a communicant of Sacred Heart Church and volunteered at its Adoration Chapel. He was former director of the Youth Basketball Program at St. Francis of Assisi Church in North Adams, coached the Little League Pittsfield Police Department Team and volunteered at the Ralph Froio Senior Center.

He leaves his wife, the former Rita Boucher, whom he married May 25, 1954; his daughter, Patricia Faber of Pittsfield; two sons, Michael Rowley and his wife, Gaye, of Reno, Nev., and Peter Rowley of Pittsfield; his grandchildren Kellen Faber and his wife, Andrea, Garret Faber, David Faber and Jordan Rowley, as well as his brother-in-law, George Olsen, and four nephews.

He was predeceased by his sister, Anne Olsen.

FUNERAL NOTICE — A Liturgy of Christian Burial for Mr. Rowley will be celebrated Thursday, Sept. 15, at 11 a.m. at St. Elizabeth of Hungary Church, North Adams. Burial will follow in Southview Cemetery in North Adams.

A calling hour will be held Thursday morning from 9:30 to 10:30 at Flynn & Dagnoli-Montagna Home for Funerals, Central Chapels, 74 Marshall St., North Adams. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Joseph's High School in Pittsfield in care of the funeral home.

'Hooper' Rowley helped more young people in North Adams than most people know. As the director of the St. Francis Youth Basketball League he introduced many young boys to basketball and influenced thier lives in a very positive way. We should all follow his example and remember him in our prayers.
