Vera Gangel, 84

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Vera Gangel, 84, of 1436 Belmont Ave., Schenectady, N.Y., died Sunday, Oct. 16, 2011, at Bethesda Memorial Hospital in Boynton Beach, Fla., after a courageous and arduous battle with pancreatic cancer.

Born in Pittsfield on Sept. 12, 1927, daughter of Morris and Lillian Schoenhaus Stoskin, she graduated from Pittsfield High School.

In her younger years, Ms. Gangel worked at General Electric Co. in Pittsfield, where she met her ex-husband. She was last employed by Knolls Atomic Power Laboratory in Schenectady for many years until her retirement 15 years ago.

She was a member of Knesset Israel Synagogue in Pittsfield and Agudat Achim Synagogue in Schenectady. She followed in her own mother's footsteps as a lifelong member of Hadassah. She maintained a residence in Delray Beach, Fla., where she was a committee member of the New England Club at Huntington Lakes. She also was the founder and administrator of the Northeast Jewish Singles Group of the Tri-city Area. She enjoyed travel and thrived on socializing with a large network of close friends. She was an avid shopper and skilled bridge player.

Ms. Gangel lived life to the fullest and had an abundance of energy and enthusiasm for living, right up until her final days. A devoted mother and grandmother, she adored her grandchildren and had a meaningful relationship with each of them.

She leaves her daughter, Barbara Gershen-Swartz and her husband, Bruce Swartz, of Newton; two sisters, Laura Stoskin of Pittsfield and Edith Taskin of North Adams, her devoted grandchildren Samuel Swartz, Maya Swartz and Tori Swartz, and nieces and nephews.

FUNERAL NOTICE The funeral for Ms. Gangel will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 19, at 11 from Knesset Israel Synagogue, 16 Colt Road, Pittsfield. Burial will follow in Knesset Israel Cemetery.

A meal of consolation at Knesset Israel will follow the burial. Memorial contributions may be made to Lustgarten Foundation, an organization that devotes 100 percent of its funds to pancreatic cancer research in care of Flynn & Dagnoli-Bencivenga Funeral Home, 5 Elm St., Pittsfield, MA 01201.
