Gary W. Grogan, 75

June 12, 2012

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — Gary W. Grogan, 75, of North Adams died Tuesday, June 12, 2012, at North Adams Regional Hospital, after being admitted from Greylock Commons Nursing Home.

Born in North Adams on July 12, 1936, to William and Auriella Grogan, he grew up in Clarksburg and Pittsfield, graduating in 1955 from Pittsfield High School. He moved to North Adams later in life.

He served in the Marine Corps from 1955 to 1957, and was very proud to be a veteran.

Mr. Grogan had a longtime career as a paint specialist with Lynch Paint Co. and Farrell Paint in the area.

In the early 1970s, he founded and coached a Babe Ruth Baseball Team in Lanesborough and ensured that the sport of baseball continued in the community for his sons and their teammates to enjoy. It was a sport that Mr. Grogan and his sons truly enjoyed sharing together. Many merchants from Lanesborough helped sponsor the team, which led to it being named the Lanesborough Merchants. Meanwhile the community came together and carved out a baseball diamond to complete this endeavor. The Lanesborough Merchants soon became a member of the Adams Babe Ruth League. Mr. Grogan also enjoyed attending all his grandsons' hockey and football games.

His greatest pride and joy were his children, Michael, Kathleen and Shaun, and his grandchildren. He was very proud of his Irish heritage and loved to recite Irish poems and sing Irish songs. He was a fun-loving man with many friends who loved and cared for him.

He leaves his former wife, Betty Graves; two sons, Michael Grogan and his wife, Chery, of North Adams and Shaun Grogan and his wife, Shelly, of Peru; his daughter, Kathleen Grogan Dobson of Bradenton, Fla.; two brothers, Brian Grogan and his wife, Linda, of Sapulpa, Okla., and Glenn Grogan and his wife, Lisa, of the town of Washington; five grandchildren, Ryan Grogan, Jamie Dobson, Shaine Grogan, Shanna Grogan and Shayla Grogan; three great-grandchildren, Austin and Taylor Grogan and Gavin Dobson; his nieces Stephanie Grogan and Erin Grogan and nephews Stephen Grogan, Kelly Grogan and Lane Grogan.

His grandson Michael Grogan predeceased him.

FUNERAL NOTICE — A memorial service for Mr. Grogan will be held Thursday, June 14, at 11 at Flynn & Dagnoli-Montagna Home for Funerals, West Chapels, 521 West Main St., North Adams. Burial will be private. Donations can be made to the Bill Laston Memorial Park, BTCF (Berkshire Taconic Community Foundation), PO Box 400, Sheffield, MA 01257 or Mill City Productions in care of the funeral home.
