PITTSFIELD, Mass. — There's a dog at the Berkshire Humane Society who has been waiting for a new family.

iBerkshire's Companion Corner is a weekly series spotlighting an animal in our local shelters that is ready to find a home.

Lola is a three year old terrier and Pitbull mix. She can take a minute to warm up to new people.

Canine caregiver and adoption counselor Simone Olivieri told us about Lola.

"Lola can be a little bit shy and nervous with new people at first, but it really doesn't take her too long to warm up to people, because she loves food and she also loves to play," Olivieri said. "So if you start playing tug or fetch or anything with her, she's going to start to get really comfortable and open up with you, because you're the person that makes the fun happen."

Once Lola warms up she will become very happy and very playful. She arrived at the shelter with her brother Blue in July after their owner could no longer keep them.

"So she came in, there were a couple other dogs in the house," Olivieri said. "The three of them came in right now, her brother Blue is still here as well. Unfortunately, the owner was losing housing, and that is how she came here."

Lola would be best as the only dog in a home, and she could go home with older kids who can  respect her space.

"She would do well as the only animal in the home. She does have a high prey drive, so she will chase cats and small animals. So no cats, no small animals," Olivieri said. "And as for other dogs, she did come from a home with other dogs, but we found here that she would prefer to play with people and interact with people rather than really play with other dogs. So she would do best as the only dog in the house as well."

But Lola enjoys having walks with other dogs.

"She enjoys going on walks and kind of hanging out with other dogs. But she wouldn't like to live with another dog," Olivieri said. "She really wants all of her toys and all the attention to herself."

Lola doesn't have any special needs but does need to learn to eat her food slower.

"She's very intense about her food, so we feed her with a slow feeder so that she doesn't inhale it too quickly. She's on natural balance, which is a limited ingredient food that just kind of helps good healthy skin and promotes a good coat. So her skin and her coat are just looking really good."

Lola is very active and needs a family who can help keep her active and play with her.

"She would really like a family where someone is home with her quite a bit. She really does enjoy the company of people. She wants to be right there next to you. That being said, she doesn't mind being alone for certain periods of time," Olivieri said. "She's pretty good and quiet in her kennel, but she'll get a little bit kind of shut down, or a little sad or just kind of curl up if she's not getting as much human interaction as she would like to, that's her way of displaying a little stress."

Her new family will have to be willing to go on walks and be outside with her for awhile doing various activities to keep her happy.

"She does want someone who is going to play with her. She's really into tug and fetch, and she's extremely athletic, so she needs kind of a little bit of everything, like physical exercise, hiking, walks, yes, also a lot of engagement in playtime and also some training. She's really smart and food motivated. So someone who can give her a little bit of everything is going to be perfect," Olivieri said.

Lola's fee is waved until Oct. 19.
