PITTSFIELD, Mass. — On Jan. 31 at 11:21pm the Pittsfield Fire Department (PFD) responded to 7 Virginia Ave. for a reported structure fire.
4 Engine companies, a ladder company and Deputy Chief responded.
Engine 2 arrived on the scene within 60 seconds of leaving their station and reported fire coming from the front of the single-story cape cod style residence. E-2 immediately stretched a hose line to attack the fire and make entry into the building.
E-3 and E-6 arrived and worked together to establish a water supply.
Tower 1 was assigned to perform a primary search of the building while E-2 continued attack of the fire. A short time later, a female was located by E-2 and Tower 1 crew on the first floor and rapidly removed out the front of the building and transferred to Action Ambulance for transport to BMC.
No other victims were located during the primary and secondary searches.
E-1 was assigned as the rapid intervention team. The fire was deemed under control in less than 30 minutes and crews worked for another 30 minutes overhauling and cooling any remaining hot spots.
Hinsdale Fire Department was requested early on to respond with their rehab bus due to the extreme cold and provided warm shelter, food and drinks for personnel throughout the incident.
Several off-duty firefighters were called back to staff the command position, an engine and truck company at HQ.
County Ambulance provided EMS coverage throughout the incident PFD fire investigators responded along with Mass State Police troopers assigned to the Fire Marshals office.
One firefighter sustained a minor wrist sprain but did not seek treatment.
One engine company remained on scene to assist on scene fire investigators and check for "hot spots." There is no estimate of damage loss at the time.
Further details on the condition of the rescued victim will be made public upon completion of the investigation.
The home suffered severe fire and water damage throughout and all utilities were disconnected outside the building.
